We can learn a great deal when we share ideas! Our First Grade classes came together in the Courtyard on a beautiful Fall day to discuss Weather. Looking in books with a partner, the children read to look for great weather words. After making a list of many types of weather, we imagined ourselves standing in a certain type of weather. What would we wear? What things would we need to protect ourselves? Great ideas, wonderful discussions, and engaged learning!

Today we saw a detailed drawing with a sad short sentence describing it:
The girl painted. The children helped Mrs. Welzenbach add details to make the sentence more interesting. It also described the picture more accurately. "The girl painted a picture of a tree in the Art Room." then "The girl painted a picture of a tree in the Art Room when she was holding cotton candy." After much discussion, (cotton candy?,flowers?, or ice cream?) here's what we came up with: The happy girl in the dress with pink spots paints a picture of a huge tree in the Art Room when she's eating cotton candy. Now THAT paints a picture with words! Our third component of DAILY FIVE is "Listen to Reading". I cannot stress enough how important it is for young readers to have good reading modeled for them. Throughout the day reading is modeled with quality picture books and read aloud literature. During the DAILY FIVE literacy time your child will be accomplishing this independently with the help of classroom technology. He or she will be listening to books recorded to I-PODS, CD's and via the online Memorial Library website. (Thank you for sending in the headphones so we can do this quietly!)
If you are reading this BLOG you are very close to accessing the Library website and the books available there. A link is posted on my "Learning Websites" page. *Please click on the link. *Look to the right and click on the purple oval, Read Along With the Story. *Click on TumbleBook Library. *Click to open the RED Storybooks box. *YOU ARE IN! Choose from the many books. You can also plan a good fit by checking how long it will take to be read to you. The minutes are posted under each story summary. As a parent you can help your child gain independence accessing these pages by guiding him or her to them at home. Every skill takes some practice to become fluent. We hope to help our children become fluent at accessing technology learning tools as well as becoming fluent readers. TODAY'S ASSEMBLY -- We had an assembly presenting ways to overcome "Bullying".
The students learned THEY have the power to fend off those who bully. They have an awareness and have strategies to stop the bullying. DAILY FIVE - We Read with Someone today. Echoing line by line is a great way to engage each partner when Reading to Someone. Everyone must pay attention! The children have settled nicely into our new room across the hall.
We are enjoying the additional space and the morning sunshine streaming in the windows. After making a list of things that are the same and different about our room, the children discovered that, although the "look" is a bit different, the classroom components are about the same. We have a Word Wall, Mailboxes, Coat hooks, Desks, , Book Boxes, a Lunch Bin, Calendar, Thermometer, Star of the Week displays, and ...the fish! I look forward to creating a room with the children that is a safe place to learn, cooperate and explore. READING NEWS- In our CAFE, we focused on the "C" today - Comprehension. We know it's important to understand what we read, so we "Check for Understanding" on each page. One strategy good readers use to clarify if they do not understand is to : "<-----Back Up and ReRead<-----". In Daily Five, we were introduced to a new way to practice our reading: Read to Someone. Ask your child what it means to sit EEKK! They look forward to practicing this new way to read and building their stamina. MATH NEWS - We are reviewing and practicing using tallies to record our counting. Our first HomeLink went home on Tuesday. HomeLinks encourage development of number sense and recognition that math skills aren't used only in the classroom but in many places everyday. SOCIAL STUDIES - Map Skills: Compass Rose and Map Key WRITER'S WORKSHOP - Noun = a person, place or thing Verb = an action word. We created 2 lists of nouns and verbs, then created some good sentences with them. |
