Students enjoyed the adventure of seeing planets, moons, and stars in our solar system while inside THE DOME. It was very dark inside, but hopefully you can catch a glimpse of what the children saw today. "The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." Friday we read the story, Martin's Big Words, by Doreen Rappaport. The book is a biography with pictures that tells the story of Martin Luther King Jr. It explains the world he lived in as a child, and how he worked to make it a better place, not just for himself, but for all people. Your first graders responded by making a list of words that were important to Dr. King. Our classroom door is filled with these words, reminding us to work together in peace and love and respect for one another. Whenever we read with children, we have the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations. We can ask and answer questions and encourage children to think deeply. I'll be asking your first grader about the above quote by Dr. King this week. ...can't wait to hear how they process it.
New Traffic pattern begins Monday, 1/7Don't forget we are implementing the new drop off/pick up patterns beginning Monday, January 7. K-5th drop off from cars will take place at the back of the school where the students have been lining up all year. Children will exit and enter cars from the marked drop off zone. Please be patient and please remember that our goal is for a SAFE system for all our students and their families. The following is a link to the the plan as explained by our principal, Mrs. Hoffmeier.http://greenbrierweb.sd25.org/pages/Greenbrier_ES
I hope you've been enjoying time with family and friends during the Winter Break. If you have not explored Mr. McHugh's reading recommendations, I encourage you to check it out. You may get there two ways: You may search for his website the same way you log on to this site. When you go to the staff directory, scroll down to Mr. McHugh's name. It is below the 5th grade teachers' pages. Or just click on this link: https://sites.google.com/a/sd25.org/greenbrierlmc/mr-m-s-top-12-of-2012.
One of the trailers (mini previews, just like at the movies) includes the instructions to make a fortune cookie wookie! |
