The children created thank you ribbons, telling the custodians all the things we are so appreciative of. Our custodians work tirelessly to keep our school clean and ready for all our activities. Thank you Mr. M and Mr. G!
This week we traveled to Kenya, Africa. Tuesday and Wednesday we:
* made a Kenyan flag * created a mural in the hall of animals we 'd see on an African safari * made jewelry, stringing necklaces and bracelets of beads and bells. * played Mancala, an ancient African game once played by scooping 12 holes in the sand or dirt, then dropping pebbles into each hole, saving some for your own well. *learned some words in the language of Keswahili, one of the two formal languages spoken in Kenya. There are also over 100 tribes which also communicate in a variety of languages and dialects. After the frenzy and excitement making animals, birds and flags of Kenya, Wednesday was a relaxing day to talk, visit, learn and be mellow.Thank you Mr. Larkowski and Mrs. Mainville for volunteering to help with these experiences. Photo Gallery is posted below: "The Bald Eagle is a good symbol for America because it is better than a turkey." This young researcher remembered that Ben Franklin had wanted the national bird to be a turkey. The bald eagle was chosen for its bravery and The students worked in small groups to research national symbols and landmarks that interested them. They used books and internet sites, wrote complete thought in their organizers, drew a picture of their symbol and shared their report with the first grade. We have located and marked them on a large US map. The students had a chance to meet their 5th grade "buddies! Mr. Johnson presented a mini lessons about the 3 branches of the United States government and the kids worked in small groups to illustrate a branch. They used iPADS and laptops to search for images that they could include . Our 3 branches are like 3 legs of a stool that must be balanced for the People. We also used this time to talk about the Character Counts Pillar: Respect. Using ideas they shared about how to demonstrate this pillar, the children introduced themselves and were careful to include all ideas and drawings in their group representation. We look forward to gathering once each month, getting to know each other , learning together, and having fun! |
