Talk with your child in your native language. Doing this helps your child develop a broad base of knowledge and vocabulary. Knowing these concepts in L1 will be helpful when your child links these concepts to his or her second (or third) language.
*What should you talk about? ~Meals - explain why you like certain foods and why they are good for you. ~Weather - how does it affect what you wear or how you care for your home. ~Pop Culture or songs that you like. ~Sports Teams - Go Bears or Go Blackhawks. Talk about the games! and many more! Your child will benefit from this background knowledge and you will be building a relationship together. If you have ideas that you've had fun talking about, please post your thoughts! Keep on Learning! |
